2 drivers arrested in fatal drunk driving accident

Police in Texas recently arrested two people accused of driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrests followed a fatal accident in which one person was killed and another was left in a coma. One of those arrested for drunk driving did not cause the accident and was actually in a vehicle that was hit by the other alleged drunk driver.

According to police, a 21-year-old driver got behind the wheel of his pickup truck after he had been drinking heavily at a bar. At approximately 1 a.m., the pickup truck driver clipped the rear of another, smaller pickup, but did not stop. Instead, he continued driving through a nearby intersection, where he collided with yet another vehicle.

A driver for Lyft had been behind the wheel of the second vehicle that was hit, and the impact sent him to the hospital in a coma. The Lyft passenger did not survive the collision. The driver who allegedly caused the accident submitted to blood-alcohol testing, and police claim that he registered a .21. This is more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit. The driver of the other pickup that he hit was not injured, but failed field sobriety testing and was also arrested for drunk driving.

Police charged the driver accused of causing the wreck with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter. Both of these charges can have severe criminal consequences, including steep fines and lengthy prison sentences. Texas drivers accused of drunk driving and related charges should consider beginning their criminal defenses as early on as possible, as these types of allegations tend to proceed relatively quickly.
